Musikken har siden midten af dette århundrede bredt sig udover samfundet og når os nu i utallige situationer: på arbejdet, i hjemmet, til fest, som baggrundsstøj og som intenst perciperet kunstprodukt. Sammen med design er populærmusikken den eneste æstetiske ‘genre’, der siden tresserne har virket med i udformningen af vores hverdag – og på denne måde, på bed-ste avantgardevis, har nedbrudt skellet mellem kunst og liv.
På den anden side er den populære musik blevet fanget i et hul mellem kunst og massekultur. Nok fungerer popmusikkens forskellige genrer som vores generations måske vigtigste sociale og kulturelle markør, ligesom de er en vigtig komponent i den enkeltes selvforståelse og selvpræsentation i forhold til andre. Men med musikkens centrale placering i vores ‘æstetiske opdragelse’ in mente, bliver det alligevel utilfredsstillende blot at se den som konsumprodukt og indentitetsmarkør.
Der er på den anden side ingen tradition for at behandle den nye musik som kunst med stort K – på linie med Picasso, Flifiderlin og Beethoven – eller blot at give den den kritiske opmærksomhed, æstetiske produkter normalt tildeles i akademia. Måske er det derfor at musikken – og da især poppen – er `den glemte kunstart’ i de fleste refleksioner over kunsten, hvad enten disse er filosofisk-æstetiske eller er rettet mod forholdet mellem kunst og samfund.

Følgende nummer af Kulturo samler en række artikler om musikken siden tresserne. Fælles for dem er forsøget på at reflektere over musikken, dennes betydning samt placering i samfundet på et niveau, der rækker ud over såvel rock/popmusik-kens utallige gratis-aviser og fanzines, som dagspressens foromtaler og anmeldelser.
