<p>I denne udgave af Kulturo tager artiklerne afsæt i billedkunst og litteratur fra to forskellige perioder; det foregående og det forestående sekelskifte. <br>Tiden omkring år 1900 forbindes med fin-de-siecle kulturen og den stemning, der opstod ved overgangen fra `den gamle&#8217; til &#8216;den moderne&#8217; verden. Perioden rummede stærkt modstridende følelser, hvor spleen og visionær eufori lå som to modsatte sindsstemninger i mange kunst-nere og hvor den gængse virkelighedsopfattelse blev sat i fokus &#8211; og mødte modstand. 1990&#8217;ernes kunstscene ser ganske anderledes ud og er langt fra præget af samme følsomhed og meningssogen. Kunsten ved dette årtusindskifte afsøger i højere grad feltet omkring kunstnerindividet.</p>



<p>En del af artiklerne i dette nummer omhandler således samtidskunsten set fra et diskursanalytisk og kontekstorienteret perspektiv. Her anskues kunstværket ikke som et selvstændigt, æstetisk objekt, men snarere som et produkt af de sociale, kulturelle og politiske relationer, det uundværligt er indspundet i. Denne kunstopfattelse er grundlaget for Peter Weibels æstetiske teorier, der argumenterer for, at man bor se kunsten udelukkende som en social konstruktion. Peter Greenaways udstillingsvirksomhed og kuratorernes stigende indflydelse i 1990&#8217;erne er udtryk for, at der også omkring udstillingspraksis sættes fokus på de institutionelle og politiske forhold ved kunsten i et forsøg på at ombryde institutionens traditionelle autoritet og magt. Om dette så lykkes kan diskuteres. <br>Samtidig synes samtidskunsten at være meget optaget af grundlæggende begreber som køn og national identitet. På samme måde som kunstværket, opfattes &#8220;identitet&#8221; som et socialt konstrukt uden reference til nogen dybereliggende autenticitet. Sådanne synspunkter diskuteres artiklerne om 70&#8217;ernes feministiske kunst og japansk kvindelitteratur. <br>Som en slags modstykke hertil står analysen af Michael Kviums &#8220;Oralmoral&#8221;-billeder, hvor der ses nærmere på værkernes tematisering af ondskab. Artiklen om Kvium repræsenterer således en anden central retning indenfor 90&#8217;ernes kunst og kunstkritik: interessen for det kropsligt ekstreme og beskuerens fysiske reaktion på kunsten.</p>



<p>Fra tiden op til det foregående århundredeskifte bringer vi artikler om Cezannes værker og Rodins skulpturer. Bagerst i bladet findes endvidere &#8211; som noget nyt &#8211; to litteraturanmeldelser. Denne gang af bøger, der relaterer sig til det europæiske kulturliv omkring århundredeskiftet og leverer nyfortolkninger af henholdsvis fin-de-siecle perioden i Wien og Marcel Prousts forfatterskab.</p>
