Cement, jern, glas, fedt, nylon… Kulturo nr. 11 handler om moderne materialer. Om stoflighed, utopi og funktion. Om de materialer, der gjorde modernismens boligprojekter mulige – og gjorde samme boliger ubeboelige. Om længslen efter materialernes materialitet og kritikken af det 20. århundredes rationelle utopier.

Asmund Havsteen-Mikkelsen skriver i sin artikel “Kurven, krusningen og krumningen” om de moderne materialers fleksibilitet som en forudsætning for Le Corbusiers utopiske arkitektur. I sit essay “Vores bolig forandrer sig: og lejerne må lide under det” analyserer den italienske forfatter Carlo Emilio Gadda omkostningerne ved at leve i den moderne bolig. Diskrepansen mellem utopi og stoflighed er et tema i det store interview med kunstneren Jakob Jakobsen “I den materielle verden”. Ifølge Thea Juhl-Nielsens analyse af Joseph Beuys i artiklen “fedt og filt”, ligger kimene til den sociale utopi i materialernes iboende, stoflige egenskaber. Endelig harcelerer den østrigske arkitekt Adolf Loos over sin samtids hang til at lade materialerne imitere hinanden – i artiklen “Byggematerialer”.

Nummeret indeholder også artikler om brugen af bogstaver og ord som ornamenter i malerkunsten, og om Roland Barthes’ skriftbegreb, som det udfoldes i hans tid-lige manifest Skriftens nulpunkt. Og fra KULTUROs japanske gæsteskribent en artikel om spejle i barokkens billedkunst.

KULTURO nr. 11 slutter af med en enquete afkorte tekster, skrevet over temaet Berlin — mellem fortrængning og erindring. Såvel mentalt som materielt er Berlin mærket af de voldsomme begivenheder, der har præget byens historie i det tyvende århundrede. Sporene efter historien ligger gemt i Berlins uanselige sprækker: de glemte begivenheder ligger spredt ud over byen, tilgængelige for det blik, der opsøger dem.
